“It’s definitely a chrysalis of some sort,” I mused some time later, looking up from the counter where I performed most of my metaphysical tests.

Damien unfolded his lanky legs and pushed away from the wall where he’d been leaning for the past several minutes. My pulse skittered when he pressed close to me, even though I knew he just wanted to get a closer look at the petrie dish housing clippings from the cocoon. Hard to get the hormones to listen no matter what the mind might say.

“Interesting. And you could tell that just by looking at those itty bitty pieces?”

The wry grin playing about his lips softened the sarcastic question. For some reason I couldn’t tear my gaze away from his lips. I found my mind wandering back to the kiss we had shared what now seemed ages ago. If I were honest with myself for one moment, I desperately wanted another taste of heaven, however brief. My silence caught his attention, and fathomless gray eyes turned to look into my own.

Damien opened his lips as if to speak—probably to warn me off—but it was just the opening I’d been waiting for, and I jumped at it.

I leaned forward the scant inches separating us, claiming his lips with my own and slipping my tongue inside the inviting warmth of his mouth. My arms wrapped around his back and I drew myself closer to the rock-hard planes of his chest. He shuddered as my tongue brushed against his. I feared he might find the willpower to resist, but passion flared too strongly to be denied; not even Angelboy could withstand its hungry demands.

He groaned, sliding his arms around me and fisting his hands in my hair. I gasped when he yanked me still closer. This time his mouth assaulted mine, tongue and teeth sending shivers along my skin as he plied them both ruthlessly. Most men seemed intimidated by me, especially if I initiated the foreplay. Not Damien, who gave as good as he got. The world around us seemed to pale into insignificance. I no longer cared about the chrysalis or the case or even the fact that Jewel and Blondie were upstairs. All I cared about was the fire raging between us.

His skin felt hot beneath my fingers even through the scrap of cotton separating us. My breath hitched at the thought of all that molten heat there for the touching and I nearly panted from the force of desire pooling inside. Part of me felt like this was insane; we’d only known each other for days and already I craved his touch more than the handful of mortals I’d trusted enough to allow in my bed over the years. None of them would I have ever trusted with my life, however—and certainly not my soul. Not the way I did Damien.

As if he could sense my thoughts—and considering how out-of-control I currently felt, he probably could—Damien switched from plundering my mouth to kissing his way along my neck before blazing a trail from there to the pulse point near my ear.
